SUBMISSION GRAPPLING & MMA

SUBMISSION GRAPPLING

Submission Grappling’s objective is to submit an opponent using a variety of joint locks or chokes, or to win the match by points. Competitions in this sport resemble BJJ competitions, although competitors do not usually wear a Gi. The absence of the Gi increases the speed and athleticism required, but limits the sweeping and submission options.

Submission Grappling is mainly based on BJJ. The influence of BJJ can be seen in the types of positions and submissions most commonly used in the sport.

Submission Grappling for Self-Defense: While some have argued that “dirty” tactics, such as eye-gouging, kicking the groin, biting, etc. reduce the effective of submission grappling as a means of defense, the argument is not well-rounded. A person skilled in submission grappling will be able to adjust their body position in relation to the attacker to protect specific areas of the body while maintaining a dominate position.
